North/South Night

About six or seven years ago, the hubby and I came up with a tradition we like to call North/South Night. It was a Thursday and I was close to the end of a stressful week of work. I needed a drink — a strong one. The hubby had come home late from an Aikido class. He was up for a yummy snack. He started making some homemade buttermilk biscuits. I suggested some Manhattans. And North/South Night was born.

I’ll admit, the pairing isn’t necessarily an obvious one. We think the richness of a warm biscuit topped with butter and honey is a solid match for the straight alcohol sting of a well-mixed Manhattan. But, if you don’t agree, please feel free to make them separately.

The hubby is the family baker and he likes this Fluffy Biscuits recipe he found on Allrecipes.com — he just subs in buttermilk for the milk called for in the original. First, he puts together the dry ingredients…

And then adds the vegetable shortening and mixes it in gently with his hands.

Then he combines the wet ingredients.

And pours the wet stuff into the dry stuff.

And mixes them together until they look like this.

He kneads the dough and then cuts it into individual portions.

And oh-so-gently pats them out and puts them on a cookie sheet.

Biscuits

And pops them in the oven for a bit.

While those fine biscuits bake, we start mixing up the Manhattans…

Manhattans (serves 2)

4 oz bourbon

1 oz sweet vermouth

2-3 dashes of bitters

2 Maraschino cherries

Combine first three ingredients in shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Pour into chilled martini glasses. Dunk a maraschino cherry in each glass.

You should end up with something that looks like this:

Manhattan

Try not to drink the whole Manhattan while you wait for the biscuits. If so, repeat steps above. You’ll know the biscuits are done when they look like this:

Just load them with some butter and honey…

And serve up with your lovely beverage for a tasty late night treat.

North/South Night

Trust me, sweetie, when I tell you that you do not want to know how many calories are in this potent combination. Just consider it a well-earned splurge and enjoy every blissful bite and sinful sip. You have undoubtedly earned it.

I hope you at least used a good ol’southern bourbon!

  2. It’s the North part! We used CC, of course! (Preferred brand of the hubby.)

  4. What brand of bourbon is CC? You need to show him how to make those biscuits on the Egg. Why? Why not!!

  5. Hey Jason! CC is Canadian Club — doesn’t get much further north than that! 😉 Agreed — I think we will try the biscuits in our cast iron skillet next time.
